ΟΦΗ ένα ιστορικό σωματείο
Το σκακιστικό τμήμα του ΟΦΗ ιδρύθηκε το 1994 και στεγάζεται στην αίθουσα «Εμμ. Παπακαλιάτης» του κεντρικού γηπέδου «Θεόδωρος Βαρδινογιάννης» στην περιοχή Καμίνια του Ηρακλείου. Αρχικά στηρίχτηκε σε σκακιστές που είχαν αποχωρήσει στην ισχυρή ομάδα τότε του Ο.Α.Α. «Ηράκλειο» και αμέσως άρχισε να λειτουργεί η ακαδημία η οποία γρήγορα απέδωσε καρπούς, με αποκορύφωμα την κατάκτηση του Πανελλήνιου Πρωταθλήματος Παγκορασίδων (μέχρι 12 ετών) από την σκακίστρια του Ο.Φ.Η Εύα Φανουράκη το 1997.
